Quoted in Print!

This year I received an amazing Christmas gift – my words were actually quoted in a print book!

The publisher wrote to me asking to use a quote from my review and I was more than happy to give them the go ahead.

Even though I live in Portugal, they actually offered to ship a copy to me, which I have to admit I was thrilled to receive.

Also, it’s Penguin, you guys! I have to say I am ecstatic.

The book is The House, by Simon Lelic.

I really enjoyed reading this psychological thriller. The writing style was quite unique, as both main characters would take turns writing in the form of a journal that served as a tool to cope with what had happened.

The characters were extremely well-developed and the story was enthralling. I do recommend it among others of the same genre.

And finally, my quote:

It is quite anonymous but I am still extremely happy with it.

Has anything of the sort happened to you? Tell me everything!

On Ana’s Lair’s Silence

Dear Readers

I think it’s about time I posted something explaining my silence.

You may have noticed I did not post a November wrap-up post, which was a first. The fact is I didn’t finish any books that month, nor wrote any reviews on films or other stuff, so I felt it would be rather pointless.

My life has taken quite a turn these past couple of months. I posted before that I lost my Kindle. That alone made my reading time decrease a lot, as you can imagine. Physical copies are great but they don’t allow so much leeway as a Kindle does. Not to mention that all the books I want to read and review are there. I have been feeling especially guilty because an author I have reviewed for since the beginning of her series asked me to review the later instalment but just thinking of reading on my phone makes me cringe…

Also, a few months ago, namely in May, I decided to turn my life around. I constantly felt ummotivated, tired, with little or no energy to do anything or take care of myself. An opportunity came up to join a gym downstairs from my workplace and I figured, why not. I started going after work and at the same time improving my food habits, and I did start feeling better. However, I started going less and less and still eating poorly so quickly slipped back to the same routines.

A co-worker mentioned he went to the gym before work and I thought wow this guy is nuts. Then I started thinking, hmm, ever since I met him I have never once seen him tired or in a bad mood… I wonder if this is his secret.
Well, when daylight savings time came, I decided to give it a try. Technically I would still be waking up at the same time, my day would just be an hour longer.
Minus some days I took off work, I have since then been working out before work, waking up at 5h50 am, and I have to tell you, I really hope I can keep up the pace because I feel TONS better. More energy, better mood, I walk taller, better posture so less back pain… Not to mention I avoid morning traffic, trouble finding a parking space, crammed tube… I am still not able to catch a seat so reading time is again caught short but I usually manage only a couple of pages on tube rides and lunch breaks so yeah, it’s taking ages to finish the book I started last month.

After work I always have errands to run so by the time I get home I am really exhausted. I only really have the energy to play Sims on my phone and browse Wish and AliExpress – my two new things.

So I am really, really sorry about my silence. I am looking forward to fitting reading and reviewing back into my routine as soon as I am able to get another Kindle – that might take another month, though.

I hope all is well with you, and thank you so much for your continuous support of Ana’s Lair.

Review Format and Category Tweaking

First of all, I would like to thank everyone who voted for Poll – Publisher and Publishing Date. These were the results:

Since almost everyone seemed up for it, I have already begun including the Publisher and Publisher Date in my latest review:

I got rid of the format, which didn’t seem to be doing much, and added ‘Kindle’ to locations to make it more obvious, so in the end it looks pretty much the same as before and not cluttered, which was my main concern.

But more importantly – What do you think?

Oh and since I am all for simplifying, Blog Freebies, GR First Reads and Rafflecopter subcategories are all under Giveaways now.

Looking forward to your feedback!

New on Pinterest and Instagram

As part of my pursuit to use social media more actively I have created accounts in Pinterest and Instagram.

I haven’t done much with them yet but I have to admit I really like Pinterest’s boards, they are very handy, and the stuff I find there is quite inspirational. Sometimes I misclick and add stuff to the wrong board though and I find it difficult to remove the pins from there, especially on the app!

Instagram seems cool as well and I hope I will be posting more when I get my new phone (whenever that will be)! Not sure I can create pictures nearly as beautiful as the ones I see around, I don’t think I have that good an eye for that kind of stuff, but we’ll see where the journey takes me.

Things are getting busier at work but hopefully I will be able to take some time to explore both, eventually.

In the meantime, if you have any tips please let me know and please feel free to add me, I will follow back:

Thank you!

500 Posts and a Tweak

Quick update – Today I published my 500th post and tweaked my top bar to reflect the blog’s recent changes.
Where it used to say ‘Chats’ I am now listing all the blog’s features.
I will be adding a new one some time during this month too :)

Thank you for following Ana’s Lair and for every single time you stop by to like and comment my posts!

View Record

Good morning, everyone!

I hope you are having a lovely day.

Mine started amazingly. Not only did yesterday’s views beat Lair’s all-time record but it also reached another one that I didn’t think I would see fulfilled anytime soon – breaching 100 views in one day.

I cannot tell you how happy this makes me. Thank you so much to all who visited!

Ana’s Lair is 2 years old!

Happy Anniversary with WordPress.com!
You registered on WordPress.com 2 years ago.
Thanks for flying with us. Keep up the good blogging.

That’s right, today marks the second anniversary of Ana’s Lair. In this time I have published 477 posts, had 8600 views and 3568 visitors.

It all started as a way of getting more Netgalley approvals. I read that folks who had a blog, instead of just posting on GoodReads or Amazon, might get more requests approved so I figured… Why not. I didn’t know the first thing about blogging, let alone coding to make the page look like I wanted, but I found some helpful folks along the way who helped me with it. And then I met other amazing people who encouraged me and actually made me enjoy sharing my thoughts even more.

Back then I had plenty of free time, worked few hours, and so I could be online quite often. Then in the summer of 2015 I got a new job that keeps me very busy for stretches of time, while others I don’t have as much stuff to do, like right now. I was actually able to take the following week off, so I am extra happy.

I would like to thank each and every one of you who took the time to read, like and comment my posts. May we celebrate Lair’s anniversary next year as well!

Category Makeover

I thought the category system was not very user-friendly, especially considering I have been expanding on the stuff I usually post about, so I touched it up a tad.

You can now find:

– All Reviews including Books (subcategory where I got them from), Movies and TV;
– Features as in the blog’s weekly/monthly/yearly/otherwise features;
– Other Posts includes several categories that used to be crunched up under ‘Randomnesses’ and I felt it would be good to clarify at least some of them;
– Tags remain the same.

You can find the categories listed on the blog’s sidebar.
Please let me know what you think!

The guaranteed way to gain reviews

Suffolk Scribblings

Reviews, reviews, reviews. They are something an author both craves and fears. We are desperate for reviews, both as confirmation that what we’ve produced is liked – though I’ll let you into a little secret here, no matter how many great reviews you receive, you’ll never get rid of the thought that people are just being kind and not really telling you what they think – but also as a means to attract new readers. At the same time we’re terrified of reviews, especially early in our careers, in case they confirm our darkest fears that what we’ve created is illegible rubbish.

In my case, about a week after I published my first novel I became afflicted by a kind of desperation as I waited for somebody, anybody, to review my book. I couldn’t understand why everyone was taking so long. What was the problem? Didn’t they know how important reviews were? I ended…

Ana’s Lair on Facebook and Twitter

Dear all,

I would like to make a quick post to all who follow and keep up with Ana’s Lair.
First of all, thank you very much! I really appreciate that each and every one of you takes the time to visit the blog, especially considering I am not able to invest in it as much as I would like.

I would also like to let you know that Ana’s Lair is linked to Facebook and Twitter, where a post is automatically created when I post here. That’s not new.

However, I have also been making an effort, whenever work and other nuisances allow it, to post interesting tidbits every now and then, from quick thoughts/images to news to quizzes about the themes you usually find in the blog – books for the most part, as well as movies and the occasional TV show. They are basically an expansion of what you see here in the blog and a different way to connect with you.

So I would like to invite you to like the pages, post whenever you feel inclined and please feel free to give suggestions! I would love to engage with you in a different manner so I really hope you will join.

Have a great weekend!
